The Casting Process
The life casting process is incredibly gentle and, most importantly, completely safe. In fact, some newborn babies may even sleep through their session.
To create the mould, I use alginate, a natural, plant-derived material made from seaweed. Alginate is most commonly used by dentists to take impressions inside the mouth, which means it is very safe and suitable for even the most delicate baby skin.
For hand or foot castings, your baby’s hand or foot is gently placed into a smooth tub of alginate. After a couple of minutes, the alginate sets to a soft, rubbery consistency and the hand or foot can be carefully removed, leaving a detailed mould behind.
Once the mould has been taken, you’ll be able to choose your preferred finishes and frame colour. After that, you’re free to head home while I complete the rest of the casting and finishes over the coming weeks.
Your finished, fully displayed cast will be ready for collection within 4–6 weeks.
